How to get to Kilkenny
By Air
There are no direct international flights to Kilkenny, but it is never more than two hours drive away from any of Ireland’s main airports. That said when taking public transport, Dublin Airport is by far the easiest option.
| Dublin Airport 1 h 30 min (134 km) via M9 Motorway |
Cork Airport 1 h 50 min (160 km) via M8 Motorway |
Shannon Airport 1 h 55 min (157 km) via M7 Motorway |
By Sea
Kilkenny is not coastal, but there are 3 main Irish ports which have ferries from the UK and mainland Europe.
| Dublin Port 1 h 35 min (140 km) via M9 Motorway |
Cork Airport 1 h 58 min (166 km) via M8 Motorway |
Shannon Airport 1 h 38 min (95 km) via N25/R700 |
By Land
From Dublin:
Kilkenny is well serviced by bus and train from Dublin Airport.
Recommendation: There is a direct bus service run by JJ Kavanagh Coaches (Route 717). Otherwise you may take a local bus to Dublin city, from where you can get a connecting bus or train to Kilkenny. All options can be found on Transport for Ireland (TFI).
From Cork:
Public transport from Cork Airport is not as simple as Dublin and may take longer than directly driving.
Recommendation: Take the local bus (225/226 – Operated by Bus Éireann) to Cork City bus station. Then you can get a bus to Kilkenny (600 Operated by Dublin Coach). There may be a long wait, depending on flight arrival. There are no direct trains from Cork to Kilkenny.
From Shannon:
There is no easy or direct public transport route from Shannon Airport to Kilkenny.

There are plenty of taxis and a Kilkenny Bus Service if needed.
