It will remain cold this evening with further isolated showers, mainly in the north. Some showers will be of sleet or snow. All in light to moderate north-westerly winds, fresher along north-facing coasts.

TONIGHT

Tonight will be very cold with frost and icy stretches likely. There will be scattered wintry showers, leading to some snow accumulations, and patches of fog or freezing fog may also form. Lowest temperatures of -3 to 0 degrees in light to moderate west to north-west or variable winds.

TOMORROW - Sunday 4th January

Tomorrow will be cold with frost, ice and fog or freezing fog patches slow to clear. There'll be a mixture of sunny spells and scattered wintry showers with some snow accumulations. Highest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees with light to moderate westerly winds.

Overview: Cold with sharp to severe frosts developing overnight that may be slow to clear during the days and with wintry showers, mainly in the north and northwest. Turning more unsettled from Monday night.

Sunday night: Very cold with a sharp to severe frost and icy stretches. Scattered wintry showers will continue, most frequent in the north and west, with some snow accumulations. Patches of fog or freezing fog may form too. Lowest temperatures of -4 to 0 degrees with light to moderate northwesterly winds.

Monday: Monday will be cold with frost, ice and fog or freezing fog patches slow to clear. It'll be a dry and sunny day for most areas, although a few wintry showers will affect the north and northwest. Highest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees with light to moderate northwesterly winds.

Monday night: Early Monday night will be mainly dry and clear with frost and icy stretches. Cloud and rain will move in across the western half of the country overnight, possibly turning to sleet. Lowest temperatures of -3 to 0 degrees with moderate to fresh southerly winds developing.

Tuesday: Rain and sleet will clear from the east on Tuesday morning and will be followed by sunny spells and scattered showers, some wintry. Moderate to fresh southerly winds will ease and veer west to northwest. Highest temperatures of 3 to 9 degrees.

Tuesday night: A few wintry showers in the north and northwest but otherwise dry with long clear spells. Lowest temperatures of -2 to 2 degrees with moderate to fresh northwest winds, easing light to moderate.

Wednesday: There is uncertainty in the forecast but it's possible that rain will move in to some western areas. Staying cold with highest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees.

The further outlook remains uncertain, but there are indications for cold and rather unsettled conditions.
