UCD seeking to appoint a Full Professor of Data Science for Weather and Climate

Following last December’s announcement of a new multi-million-euro research award by Met Éireann to University College Dublin (UCD), UCD’s School of Mathematics and Statistics is now seeking to appoint a permanent Full Professor of Data Science for Weather and Climate.

This new post, aimed at supporting the further development of Ireland’s weather and climate services using data science and Artificial Intelligence, is of strategic importance for Met Éireann. Supporting an active and vibrant academic community through collaboration in areas of mutual interest contributes to improving the efficiency, effectiveness and accuracy of its services in our mission to protect life and property and to national capacity building in the areas of weather, climate and connected sciences.

The Full Professor of Data Science for Weather and Climate is a permanent post in UCD arising from a funding award of €5M over 5 years from Met Éireann with the possibility of further funding of €5M after 5 years.

This funding will support the hiring of a research team, the creation of a PhD cohort-training programme and the establishment of a Data Science for Weather and Climate Research Centre. It will also provide funding for travel, equipment and other research support.

The successful candidate will be expected to allocate the majority of their time in the delivery of the research programme, a third of which is expected to be closely working with Met Éireann.

The successful candidate will be a research leader with an international profile in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and/or Machine Learning (ML) with expertise in Earth system science or related fields, and a notable publication record in AI/ML models and their application to natural sciences, including Earth system science.
