New Masters in Artificial Intelligence for Weather and Climate Change launched

A new MSc programme co-delivered by Met Éireann and UCD aims to equip the next generation of meteorologists and climate scientists with advanced skills for understanding and predicting weather and climate phenomena.

The MSc in Artificial Intelligence for Weather and Climate Change is a one-year, full-time course and a product of the Met Éireann-funded AIMSIR – AI for Meteorological Services, Innovation and Research Centre.

The programme combines rigorous theoretical foundations with practical training in AI, machine learning, and numerical modelling, teaching students to design and implement AI systems for environmental data, forecast extremes, and assess climate impacts.

Among the core and optional modules of the programme will be a number delivered by or in collaboration with Met Éireann staff, while students will also have the opportunity to spend time at Met Éireann headquarters in Glasnevin, in particular for their MSc research theses.

Targeting graduates with backgrounds in meteorology, science, mathematics, engineering, cognate discipline, or data analytics, the ultimate objective of the course is to prepare participants to contribute to cutting-edge research and to address real-world challenges in weather forecasting, disaster mitigation, climate science and environmental policy.

The MSc is the latest collaborative initiative between Met Éireann and UCD, following the launch of the Weather and Climate Research Professorship in 2023, and will be led by Met Éireann Professor of Data Science for Climate and Weather at UCD and AIMSIR Centre Director, Prof Andrew Parnell.
