The Future of Agricultural Meteorology

Met …ireannís dedicated Agricultural Meteorology Unit is committed to providing the wider agricultural community with relevant meteorological information and services.

Farm-weather related products including soil moisture deficit maps and recent accumulations of rainfall and sunshine are available here on our website. A new farming weather commentary product has also been recently added. In this daily product our forecasters, based on recent and forecast weather, comment on expected conditions such as field trafficability, growing conditions, drying conditions as well as spraying opportunities.

The Agricultural Meteorology Unit also provides weather-related advice and information to various State bodies on relative risk associated with liver fluke and nematodirus severity as well as conditions conducive to the spread of blight and forest fires. Met …ireann also provides infrastructure to State bodies to model the likely airborne spread of Foot & Mouth Disease should the need arise.

Met …ireann is closely associated with AGMET, a grouping of agricultural meteorology professionals whose aim is to promote and develop the use of meteorological inputs for planning and decision-making in agriculture.

As part of Met …ireannís Research, Environment & Applications Division, the Agricultural Meteorology Unit is also engaged in a host of collaborative research projects with Teagasc - the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority, as well as the Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine. Our aim is to ensure that the latest available weather information is accessible to assist the Irish agricultural community.

In the near future these research projects will use weather information to help improved grass growth models, increase the accuracy of milk yield estimates and greater assist pest control management in crops.

For a complete list of Met …ireann agricultural services and products see our brochure.
