TODAY - Sunday 31st August

Breezy or rather windy today and while there'll be a good deal of dry weather across the eastern half of the country at first this morning, showers further west will continue to extend eastwards, some of them heavy at times. A more organised spell of rain in the northwest and west will gradually spread eastwards through the day too, heaviest in the west and northwest, with some localised flooding possible. There's the chance of a few isolated thunderstorms too, especially further to the northwest and west. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees in mostly fresh and gusty south to southwesterly winds, strong to near gale force at times in Atlantic coastal parts, with the winds tending to moderate inland later on.

TONIGHT

Further showers will continue to feed in from the west overnight, merging into longer spells of rain at times in the northwest, turning heavy in places. Good dry spells will develop though in eastern parts. Lowest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees with mostly moderate, occasionally fresh, southwest to west winds, strong along western coasts.

TOMORROW - Monday 1st September

Tomorrow, Monday, will bring fairly widespread showers, some of those heavy, with a longer spell of rain for a time in the northwest. There'll be some bright or sunny spells too, the best of these later in the day as the showers ease and become mostly confined to the west. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees with moderate to fresh westerly winds, decreasing light to moderate southwesterly through the evening.

National Outlook

OVERVIEW: Continuing changeable and mixed for the rest of the first week of the meteorological Autumn, with some spells of rain or showers, interspersed with some drier, brighter interludes too. Feeling cooler than recently with temperatures reaching the mid to high teens, which is normal for the time of year.

Monday night: Showers will become isolated early on Tuesday night and will be mainly confined to coastal parts of the west and northwest, with a lot of dry weather in many other areas. Some mist and fog will form as winds decrease mostly light southerly or variable. It looks like it'll become cloudier in south Munster and Leinster, with the likelihood of some outbreaks of rain. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 12 degrees.

Tuesday: Any rain affecting parts of the south and east in the morning will clear, to leave a mix of sunshine and a scattering of showers across the country. However, the showers won't be as heavy or as widespread as previous days, with the likelihood of a fair deal of dry weather overall. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees with light to moderate winds, becoming mainly westerly in direction.
Tuesday night: While it'll start off dry in many areas on Tuesday night with just a scattering of showers in the west and northwest, there's the likelihood that cloud and rain will push up from the south, to at least affect southern and eastern areas. Some mist and fog is likely too. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees in light variable breezes.

Wednesday: Latest indications are that there'll be some rain for a time on Wednesday, especially in parts of the south and east, but this will clear to the east through the morning. Otherwise and elsewhere, there'll be a scattering of showers around, a few possibly heavy, and after a rather cloudy start, some bright or sunny spells will develop. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees in light to moderate westerly winds.

Further outlook: A good deal of uncertainty in the details for the rest of the week, due to the uncertainty in the track of areas of low pressure which will be moving near Ireland.

For now though it looks like Thursday and Friday will bring sunshine and scattered showers, a few heavy, but good dry spells too. There is still a chance though that a longer spell of rain will move up from the south on Wednesday night into Thursday. Highest temperatures will continue to range between 14 and 18 degrees in mostly moderate west to southwest winds, becoming a little fresher at times, especially further west.

Next weekend: It looks like another area of low pressure will develop and deepen in the Atlantic and get anchored close to Ireland for next weekend bring wet and rather windy weather at times. It may become a little milder though.
