Cloudy today with rain becoming widespread, turning heavy in places. Windy too, with fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds. A clearance will gradually develop from the west through the afternoon with winds easing light to moderate behind the rain. Rain will linger over eastern counties until after nightfall. Highest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees, turning a degree or two cooler as the rain clears.
Any lingering rain along the east coast will clear to leave a mostly dry and clear night, with the odd isolated shower over Atlantic coastal counties. Patches of mist and fog may also develop. Noticeably colder than recent nights with lowest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees, in light to moderate southerly winds.
Crisp with plenty of winter sun to start on Friday morning. Dry for most, apart from isolated showers affecting Atlantic coasts at first, before gradually becoming more widespread. Showers will turn heavy at times with a chance of hail or isolated thunderstorms, mostly affecting parts of the south, west and northwest. Breezy too, with moderate to fresh southwest winds, and highest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees.
Outlook: A mobile Atlantic regime will dominate for the rest of the week and into next week too, bringing a continuation of unsettled weather.
Friday night: Scattered showers will continue to affect west and northwest counties. Elsewhere will see mostly dry conditions with plenty of longer clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees in moderate to fresh southwesterly winds.
Saturday: Dry and breezy for most to begin on Saturday with some brighter intervals in the south and east. Rain and drizzle in the west and north-west will turn persistent there by the afternoon with some heavy bursts developing before gradually spreading south-eastwards through the later afternoon and evneing. Afternoon highs of 9 to 12 degrees in fresh to strong and gusty south to southwest winds, with gales on Atlantic coasts.
Saturday night: A rather wet and blustery night with widespread spells of rain, heaviest in Atlantic coastal counties. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, strong and gusty near coasts.
Sunday: Some uncertainty to the detail but indications currently suggest a wet and blustery start to the day with widespread outbreaks of rain, with a clearance developing in the afternoon for parts of the west and northwest. Rain will be heaviest and most persistent in Munster and south Leinster with spot flooding possible. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees in fresh to strong southwesterly winds. Rain will gradually clear to the southeast Sunday night with scattered showers following in behind and clearer spells developing. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees, in moderating southwesterly winds.
Further outlook: Again, into next week there is uncertainty in the forecast but currently there is a signal that unsettled weather will persist. Monday looks to start off mostly dry with scattered showers over parts of the west and north. Conditions will deteriorate early on as rain from the south will gradually spread northeastwards across the country for the day.
