Today

It will remain dry for the rest of this evening, with further spells of sunshine. However it will start to cloud over along the west coast with some light rain or patchy rain later. Winds will be light to moderate and mainly westerly.

Tonight

Patchy rain and drizzle will spread to parts of the north and west tonight. It will remain dry for much of Leinster, with clearer skies and some mist and fog patches will form here. Lowest temperatures will range from 8 to 11 degrees with slack variable winds, which will pick up later in the night.

11 June 2013 - 50th Anniversary of the Mount Merrion Thunderstorms

The 11th June 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of one of the most violent thunderstorms to affect Dublin in the 20th century. On the 11th June 1963 considerable flooding occurred in the area between Dundrum, Blackrock and Sandymount.  The “official” observations only hinted at the full severity of the rainfall.  Eye-witness accounts suggested that far more than the 97.8mm (24-hour total) recorded at Ballsbridge fell in some locations.

The earthquake of the 29 May 2013 occurred at 03:16 UTC, with an epicentre approximately 13 km NW of Abersoch, Gwynedd. The instrumental magnitude was determined at 3.8 ML, and the earthquake was located approximately 21 km WSW of the magnitude 5.4 earthquake that occurred on 19 July 1984 (a magnitude of 3.8 is approximately 256 times smaller than 5.4).
